Wolf Rewilding Mission by Jack Wolfskin Outlet Store

Outdoor brand aligns with National Geographic Conservation photographer, field biologist and wolf expert Ronan Donovan.

German-based outdoor brand Jack Wolfskin is entering the fall and winter 2022 season with a mission to rewild people, places and the creatures that live in it. Inspired by Jack Wolfskin’s origin story around a campfire deep in the Canadian wilderness in the early 1980s, the new “We Live to Discover” campaign is the first phase in a global brand reset focused on educating, protecting and building awareness around outdoor environments.

The seasonal campaign is underlined by a theme at the heart of the Jack Wolfskin brand: The sustainable co-existence of humankind and animals in the wild, particularly wolves throughout Europe, North America and Asia. To that end, Jack Wolfskin has aligned with renowned National Geographic conservation photographer, field biologist and wolf expert Ronan Donovan on his latest project.

Wolves of the Rocky Mountains

The new Discovery campaign features a series of films around Donovan’s long-term work documenting the lives of wolves in and around Yellowstone National Park that bridges Montana, Idaho and Wyoming in America’s Rocky Mountains. The story evolves around Mr. Blue, a wolf that associated with many different wolves and at least 8 packs through-out his lifetime – something unheard of in wolf society. He had a rare understanding and ability to adjust to the wolfpack social structures and situations. During a 7-day tour of the park, Ronan searches for evidence of Mr. Blue’s offspring to understand common traits between wolf and human societies.

Wolf populations thrived for millennia in and around Yellowstone until settlers moved westward in the 19th century, when the relationship between wolves and people changed. Europeans had a different way of viewing land, people, and wildlife than Indigenous Peoples. They modified North America to conform to an agrarian lifestyle, displacing and killing Indigenous Peoples and damaging the natural cycles of the land. Hunters targeted game such as elk and bison, leading wolves and other predators to hunt domesticated cattle and come into conflict with settlers.

Gray wolves were reintroduced to the region 25 years ago and quickly brought the ecosystem back into balance. Today the wolves are victims of their own success as growing populations have ventured beyond the park boundaries launching new conservation challenges.

“Ronan represents the spirit of Jack Wolfskin and his stories shed light on a fascinating apex species that is critical to its natural ecosystems and controversial at the same time,” said Mokhtar Benbouazza, Vice President Marketing, Jack Wolfskin.

“His work reflects the fundamental need for all of us to rewild ourselves and seek more moments of discovery in the outdoors to help us live better, more sustainable lives.”

A Pioneering Collection

The “We Live to Discover” campaign coincides with the release of Jack Wolfskin’s all-new Discovery collection of parkas, hoodies, jackets, pants, gloves a bags built to perform in the world’s coldest climates. Named in tribute to
German explorer Arved Fuchs’s crossing of the Patagonia ice sheet in 1995, the products are made to outfit researchers and adventurers in frigid conditions with pioneering materials from Jack Wolfskin and premium partners, including Allied Feather and Pertex.

The flagship 1995 Series Down Hoody exemplifies Jack Wolfskin’s commitment to supplying best-performing products in sustainably conscious designs with its extremely lightweight yet and durable Pertex Quantum exterior fabrics made with 100 % recycled poylamide and RDS-certified 800-cuin fill power goose down insulation with HyperDRY that stays warm in damp conditions and quickly dries.

Jack Wolfskin Outlet Online Boasts Seams That ‘Never Fail’ With Waterproof, Tapeless Jacket

Jack Wolfskin’s ‘No Tape Technology’ claims to improve breathability, while eliminating more than 60 feet of excess material per jacket.

Making apparel more comfortable, durable, and sustainable with a single development isn’t easy. It takes creativity, calculation, and innovation — and some good ol’ fashioned German engineering certainly doesn’t hurt.

All of that and more went into Jack Wolfskin’s new Tapeless Jacket. The sustainably minded German outdoor brand saw an opportunity to improve the standard design for waterproof apparel by eliminating seam tape from the design.

And while seam welding has been explored by other brands like CAT and MSC, Jack Wolfskin calls its approach an “industry first.”

The brand claims the Tapeless Jacket provides even better breathability, durability, and reliability than similar taped-seam jackets. Here’s what we know.

Jack Wolfskin: Why ‘Tapeless’ Jacket?

When constructing most apparel, different panels have to be stitched together. Stitching, by nature, punches holes into the fabric, opening up thousands of little opportunities for water to seep through. Traditionally, the solution has been seam tape, a layer of polyurethane film placed along the interior seam to plug those holes.

It’s in almost every rain jacket and pant out there — turn the item inside out and you can see for yourself. The strip that follows the seams is the seam tape protecting your gear from flooding.

However, seam tape is by far the weakest point of any waterproofing. Sometimes it fails and needs to be replaced. It also adds weight to a rain jacket or rain pants, and it reduces the breathability — and even durability — of the product.

It isn’t a perfect solution. But there also haven’t been better options for apparel makers to waterproof the seams of their products.

Going Tapeless

Jack Wolfskin’s Tapeless Jacket marks the first product into which the brand will incorporate its No Tape Technology. Instead of using that small strip of polyurethane to seal seams, it used its proprietary three-layer waterproof-breathable fabric and welded the seams shut instead of taping them.

Jack Wolfskin will sew panels of this waterproof-breathable fabric together, without punching holes all the way through. The needle only penetrates the shell layer, while the inner layer is welded with water-resistant adhesive. The result is a continuous, fully sealed membrane layer within the jacket.

According to Jack Wolfskin, that maximizes the waterproofing and also eliminates “double-layering.” This, the brand claims, makes the jacket more breathable and tougher than taped-seam equivalents.

Traditionally welded seams (which companies like Arc’teryx have been experimenting with since the ’90s) don’t offer as much breathability. They can also be prone to blowing out when the adhesive degrades, and repairing them can be difficult.

Jack Wolfskin says its proprietary three-layer fabric and hybrid welding/stitching technique solves those problems and “won’t fail or leak.”

On top of that, by eliminating roughly 60 feet of seam sealing tape per jacket, Jack Wolfskin reduces the carbon footprint of every Tapeless Jacket.

At $480, the Tapeless Jacket is notably more expensive than its other waterproof jackets. It’s available in Hedge Green and Phantom (black), weighs 13.5 ounces (size medium), and can be purchased online.

JACK WOLFSKIN OUTLET STORE IMPROVES HIKING PACK DESIGN WITH 3D PRINTING

Outdoor gear manufacturer Jack Wolfskin has improved the weight, durability and ventilation of its hiking packs with additive manufacturing.

Developed in partnership with plastics technology company Oechsler and 3D printer manufacturer Carbon, the firm’s new 3D Aerorise Carry System uses four independent 3D printed panels to deliver a lightweight, multi-zone body fit capable of reducing back temperatures by up to 5°C.

“Comfort, load control and ventilation are age-old challenges in pack design,” said Magdalen Hamel, Category Manager, Equipment at Jack Wolfskin. “The technology presented in Aerorise benefits hikers on the trail and takes the industry in a new direction.

“THE DESIGN IS IMPRESSIVE FROM AN ENGINEERING PERSPECTIVE AND FURTHER SUPPORTS OUR BELIEF THAT TOGETHER, IN COOPERATION WITH PARTNERS, WE CAN MAKE A NOTABLE DIFFERENCE IN SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENTS AND PERFORMANCE EQUIPMENT.”

3D printing performance equipment

Additive manufacturing is being increasingly utilized within the performance sports sector due to its ability to deliver greater customization, enhanced designs, and reduce waste and lead times during the production process.

For instance, 3D printing and scanning technologies have been deployed to create custom-fitted aerodynamic skinsuits for Olympic cyclists, develop more ergonomic grips for Korea’s archery team, and helped the Chinese speed skating team to two gold medals during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Another well-known application of 3D printing within the performance sports sector is adidas and Carbon’s jointly developed 4DFWD midsole, which was commercially launched last year and worn by a number of athletes at the 2022 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Regarding the performance hiking scene, Carbon recently teamed up with fellow backpack manufacturer Osprey to create a 3D printed lumbar for its new pack series. The Fitscape Lumbar is designed to deliver superior mechanical properties while reducing material waste.

The 3D Aerorise pack

Now, Jack Wolfskin has developed its own backpack enhanced by 3D printing. The 3D Aerorise Carry System is the latest in Jack Wolfskin’s series of innovative collaborations, and leverages additive manufacturing to decrease waste, improve customization, and deliver a range of design benefits.

The firm worked with Oechsler and Carbon to design and manufacture the system, which consists of four 3D printed panels on the shoulders and lower back of the pack. The panels, the design of which is only possible via 3D printing, are made of an open-cell structure with thousands of struts to enhance ventilation, while lattice patterns provide vertical and horizontal firmness for comfort and load distribution.

The system is designed to eliminate common pain points around weight, durability and ventilation for hiking backpacks, due to the multi-zone fit made possible by 3D printing. The body of the Aerorise pack is constructed from 100% recycled 70D polyamide and has a carrying capacity of 40 liters.

“Additive manufacturing is changing the outdoor equipment and sporting goods world,” said Matthias Weisskopf, General Manager at Oechsler. “Working with Jack Wolfskin allowed us to further develop the Aerorise hiking backpack and solve problems that weren’t achievable until recent years.

“AERORISE IS THE START OF A NEW MOVEMENT IN IMPROVED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT THROUGH 3D DESIGN.”

Debuting in Spring 2023, the 3D Aerorise carry system will be available in three models: 3D Aerorise 40L, 20L, and 30L roll-top pack options. Once available to the public, the pack will demonstrate the successful transition of additive manufacturing technology often used in other areas of performance activity, such as running shoes, to the hiking pack category.

“Carbon’s integrated consumer materials, software and 3D printers accelerate the time-to-market of products at scale – from idea to production,” said Andreas Tulaj, Vice President Sales Europe at Carbon. “Using Carbon’s Idea-to-Production platform, Jack Wolfskin has improved the performance of the 3D Aerorise 40 backpack and worked with Oechsler to develop components that would not have been developed and brought to market so quickly using conventional manufacturing methods.

“WHEN BRANDS LIKE JACK WOLFSKIN TURN TO 3D PRINTING, IT’S A STRONG SIGN THAT ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING CONTINUES TO ENABLE INNOVATION.”
